Do you have a website? Of course, you do, doesn’t everyone? I had my first website in 2001 and practically ever since. Back then it was cute graphics and all about your family. I even learned how to code and make graphics from tutorials I found online.
I would say being a computer geek has led me to where I am today. I like the tech side of things and adding creativity to the mix.
Today for Website Wednesday, I want to share with you the 3 most important things you need to know if you own a website.
1. Know the platform your website is built on. Is it WordPress, HTML5, Squarespace, Weebly, Wix, etc…
2. Know your hosting and that it is different than your website. You could use BlueHost, GoDaddy, HostGator, LiquidWeb, etc…
a. Your domain may be under another company as well if you did not register for it at the same time you purchased hosting. Find out.
3. Know your logins for all of the above, the link to the login page, and your username and password.
a. For your website make sure you have full admin rights to the site.
b. For your hosting and domain, make sure your name is listed as the owner of both.
Your web designer may have all of this information and you aren’t worried about it since you can always ask them for it. There will come a point when you want to update something and you are no longer in contact with the web designer, maybe they changed careers or moved.
Most likely, during or upon completion of your website you received all of this information but didn’t pay much attention to it.
Today take 5 minutes and look for your information. Do you have it where you can find it? If not, look for those emails from the web designer or reach out and ask them for it. You need it for your records.
Once you have it, put it somewhere so that you will know where it is when you need it. With other business related materials, save it to your Evernote or Dropbox and name it: WEBSITE INFO.
