You still don’t have a website? Maybe you have had a few before but this time you want to do it yourself instead of hiring someone. I can help you with the first 3 steps that are pretty important.
What you need to start a website
- Hosting
- Domain
- Platform (build your website on)
Web Hosting
There is much debate about web hosting and who to use. It comes down to a few things in the options that you want.
– Are you expecting huge amounts of traffic immediately? No most likely.
– Are you in it for the long haul or short term? Paying for 3 years of hosting in advance is a cheaper option than monthly.
– Do you care to know what any of this means? You really just want it all handled for you.
The basic packages from any web host are good for you at this time if all of the above applies. I have a few that I like to recommend. Oh, but why a few? Well people like options.
Bluehost
GoDaddy
Site Ground
All of these are good hosts for the most part. Everyone has an opinion it’s like talking about cell phone providers. You might like AT&T and I don’t.
So you get to choose which looks good for you!
Domains
I suggest you find a web host and then purchase your domain. Why? because it will make life simpler. Some web hosts offer free domains when you sign up. Plus when it’s time to renew your domain and web hosting are all at the same time.
If you already have a domain purchased elsewhere that is fine. You will have a few options to have your domain directed to your website through its provider or you can transfer the domain to your web host. Either option is fine and may require a few extra steps and days to be completed. (If you are doing either of these I suggest you work with your providers or have someone handle this that knows what they are doing.)
But what about all the new domains that end in words? .solutions .photography
It’s not just the ole’ .com .net .org anymore. There are sooo many options.
Yes, that is true but not everyone is ready or used to this yet. You’re still best getting a .com also with your fancy domain. In case someone didn’t notice yours wasn’t a .com they will still find you. And someone else can’t take the .com name.
A few extra tips when you purchase your domain, lock your domain, set up auto renewals, and turn on (or pay extra) for security this will hide your information from who is which will reduce your chances of spam.
Platform
How are you building your website? Are you building it or a web designer?
You could use Squarespace, Wix, WordPress, and tons more options.
WordPress is my personal choice and I have used it for many years so I am familiar with it.
However, if you are starting out and do not want to learn for tons of hours. I would suggest trying out Squarespace or Wix or some other drag and drop setup. (However please be aware of additional charges that will come with these programs. You are paying for ease of use.)
Additionally please do not use your web hosts website builder.
If you are planning on creating your website and using a platform such as Squarespace there is no need to worry about a web host or domain as it is all encompassed in one. Squarespace services are based on monthly or yearly fees that cover your website hosting and domain.
